How to Move to Ireland from India on a Critical Skills Permit (2026)

24 June 2026 · 9 min read

India is by a wide margin the largest source of Irish employment permits: Indian nationals received 13,566 in 2024, more than the next three nationalities combined, driven by Ireland's technology sector. For most Indian professionals the route is the Critical Skills Employment Permit, one of the more generous skilled-work routes in Europe. Here is how it works from India in 2026. This is general information to help you plan, not legal advice.

How the Irish route works

Like the UK, Ireland is employer-led: you need a job offer from an Irish employer before you can apply for a permit. Unlike the UK, the Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) comes with three real advantages: no labour-market needs test, immediate family reunification, and a fast path to long-term residence. Ireland is also in the EU single market, which makes it a strong base in Europe.

Step 1: A job offer on the Critical Skills Occupations List

The CSEP is only for occupations on the Critical Skills Occupations List, the roles Ireland considers strategically important and in short supply, such as ICT professionals, engineers and technologists. Confirm your specific role is on the list before you count on this route.

Step 2: Meet the 2026 salary threshold

From 1 March 2026 the minimum salary for a Critical Skills permit is €40,904 a year for a listed occupation with a relevant degree, or €36,848 if you obtained your qualification within the previous 12 months. For some eligible roles not on the critical-skills list, the threshold is €68,911. Average critical-skills salaries run well above the floor, around €58,000.

Why the Critical Skills permit beats the General one

The alternative, the General Employment Permit (threshold €36,505 from 1 March 2026), covers a wider range of jobs but requires the employer to run a labour-market needs test (advertising the role locally first) and gives a slower route to residence. If your occupation qualifies for the CSEP, it is almost always the better permit.

The prize: Stamp 4 after two years

After two years of continuous Critical Skills employment, you can apply for Stamp 4 residency. Stamp 4 removes the need for a permit entirely, lets you change employer freely, and gives broad rights to live and work in Ireland. That two-year horizon to settled status is the main reason the CSEP is so sought after.

Your next step

Because the Irish route depends on a qualifying job offer and a salary that clears the threshold, the smartest first move is to check the salary your role would need, then map your options. Movepath builds you a personalised, step-by-step roadmap for the India to Ireland move, free to start.
