Philippines → United Kingdom: the Student visa roadmap
The UK Student visa lets people aged 16+ study full-time at a licensed sponsor institution; it is the main route into the UK for study. It does not lead to settlement on its own: graduates typically switch to the Graduate visa (post-study work) and then a settlement route such as Skilled Worker to reach permanent residence. Note: the 2025 immigration white paper proposes extending the standard settlement period from 5 to 10 years, but as of 2026 this is a proposal and not yet law, so the post-study path to permanent residence is uncertain.
Moving from Philippines
- You apply for the Student visa at the United Kingdom consulate, embassy, or visa application centre that serves Philippines, confirm the office and the current appointment wait for your region.
- Qualifications and work experience earned in Philippines usually need a credential assessment or recognition before they count toward United Kingdom's requirements.
- Budget for certified translation and apostille or legalisation of your Philippines documents (degree, police certificate, civil records).
- Check whether a Philippines passport needs a short-stay visa for any in-person biometrics or interview steps.

Timeline & path to citizenship
Timeline: From securing a CAS to a decision typically takes a few weeks once you apply (about 3 weeks from outside the UK), and the visa covers the course length (up to 5 years at degree level).
Citizenship: The Student visa does not count toward settlement; after studies most people switch to a Graduate visa and then a work route such as Skilled Worker, where indefinite leave to remain currently takes 5 years (a proposed extension to 10 years is not yet law), with British citizenship usually available 12 months after obtaining ILR.
